How?
Talking Points Memo is Pursuing a New Aspect of the Story


How do the facts and intelligence get fixed around the policy, as the highest ranking British government officials have alleged the Bush Administration was doing to justify the Iraq war?

One way would be by having the Vice President hover over the shoulders of intelligence analysts. This paragraph caught my eye from a 2003 Washington Post article. Notice how close the wording of the last sentence is to the language in the Downing Street Minutes:

"Vice President Cheney and his most senior aide made multiple trips to the CIA over the past year to question analysts studying Iraq's weapons programs and alleged links to al Qaeda, creating an environment in which some analysts felt they were being pressured to make their assessments fit with the Bush administration's policy objectives, according to senior intelligence officials."

You could also pressure your top anti-terrorism expert to cook the books. This from 60 Minutes' Lesley Stahl:

"After the president returned to the White House on Sept. 11, he and his top advisers, including Clarke, began holding meetings about how to respond and retaliate. As Clarke writes in his book, he expected the administration to focus its military response on Osama bin Laden and al Qaeda. He says he was surprised that the talk quickly turned to Iraq.

'Rumsfeld was saying that we needed to bomb Iraq,' Clarke said to Stahl. 'And we all said ... no, no. Al-Qaeda is in Afghanistan. We need to bomb Afghanistan. And Rumsfeld said there aren't any good targets in Afghanistan. And there are lots of good targets in Iraq. I said, 'Well, there are lots of good targets in lots of places, but Iraq had nothing to do with it.

'Initially, I thought when he said, 'There aren't enough targets in-- in Afghanistan,' I thought he was joking.'

'I think they wanted to believe that there was a connection, but the CIA was sitting there, the FBI was sitting there, I was sitting there saying we've looked at this issue for years. For years we've looked and there's just no connection.'

Clarke says he and CIA Director George Tenet told that to Rumsfeld, Secretary of State Colin Powell, and Attorney General John Ashcroft.

Clarke then tells Stahl of being pressured by Mr. Bush.

'The president dragged me into a room with a couple of other people, shut the door, and said, 'I want you to find whether Iraq did this.' Now he never said, 'Make it up.' But the entire conversation left me in absolutely no doubt that George Bush wanted me to come back with a report that said Iraq did this.

'I said, 'Mr. President. We've done this before. We have been looking at this. We looked at it with an open mind. There's no connection.'

'He came back at me and said, 'Iraq! Saddam! Find out if there's a connection.' And in a very intimidating way. I mean that we should come back with that answer. We wrote a report.'"

But, when all else fails, and you lack that "smoking gun" that could turn into a "mushroom cloud," maybe you just start making stuff up. I am sure many of you follow Josh Marshall's Talking Points Memo blog. Over the last year or so, Mr. Marshall has been asking a question that seems so obviously interesting, one has to wonder why he seems to be one of the only journalists asking it.

We are all now familiar with the President's false statement in his 2003 State of the Union address that Iraq was seeking to buy Uranium from Niger. I trust that all of my readers know that, prior to this address, former Ambassador Joe Wilson was sent to Niger by the Central Intelligence Agency to investigate these claims and the documents purporting to offer support for this allegation. He reported back that he had found no basis for the claims. Shocked that the allegation had found its way into the most important speech a President can give, a speech that constitutes a President's assessment to Congress about the stability and security of the United States, Wilson went public about the falsity of the allegation.

In an effort to smear Wilson and intimidate and other prospective whistleblowers, high ranking Administration officials leaked, in violation of federal law, the name of Wilson's wife and the fact that she was a clandestine operative for the CIA. A grand jury has been impaneled to determine who the leaker or leakers are, and what legal actions should be taken against them. (One journalist is now saying that the leaker was Karl Rove.)

But, as Mr. Marshall has been asking, what about the documents that purported to prove that Iraq was seeking to purchase uranium from Niger, and were later proven to be obvious forgeries? Who forged them, and whose request and why? Mr. Marshall may be closer to the answer. This paragraph caught my eye this morning:

"I've gotten hints or suggestions from several sources over the last month that new information is bubbling to the surface, not about who leaked Valerie Plame's identity, but who was behind the underlying caper that started the whole drama afoot in the first place: those phoney Niger uranium documents."

This is a very big story.

I hope we can get all of the pieces of the puzzle put together and see how far reaching this coil of deceit goes. This administrations determination to go to war with Iraq had so many faults and disasterous results that its hard to see how they could have screwed it up worse. Just think how much we could have done for Afghanistan if we would have put all of our resources over there instead of splitting them up, and causing the death and destruction, and hatred that we seem to compound with each move we make.

Yes, let's get this puzzle of deceit together. Why is there no information from Rep. Conyers on reports that Zarqawi was in Iraq for an Islamist conference in 1999? Why doesn't he mention reports that Jordan's King Abdullah wanted Saddam Hussein to extradite Zarqawi for trial in Jordan and Hussein refused? Why doesn't Conyers discuss how our so-called friends, the French and Russian governments, as well as the UN are so heavily involved in the Oil for Food scandal?

All of the reports he cites are from the untrustworthy reports from the MSM, which has scantily covered anything I've mentioned above.

The only references I've ever read to Zarqawi being in Iraq is that he was running a training camp in the north in the Kurdish area that Saddam didn't control. I've never seen anything linking Saddam with Zarqawi. As for oil for food, not even close to being a justification for war. Not related to the topic of this thread.

Now comes time for obfuscation. Facts will be thrown around like birdseed, where little kernals go in every nook and cranny, and suddenly rhyme or reason disappear. Stay the course...keep the questions coming. Don't be distracted by the camouflage. As we inch closer and closer to the truth, the flock will lose control. Suddenly we will see finger pointing in a variety of directions as no one wants to get caught up in this web of lies.

This is when we will spy 2 round things running away. Reach with your strongest hand and catch them. Don't let go. This will be the feeling that occurs when we have Bush et.al. by the BALLS!!

All what you say in this entry was common news all over the world and has already been linked up. It seems that the "most advanced country in the world" is sadly lacking in information technology if it is only now finding this link.

Well before The Sunday Times revelation, there was the BBC PANORAMA presentation which specifically used the fixing reference.

Almost 10 million people around the world, including in our small town of 100000 people here in the Arctic held the Anti War demonstration prior to the Invasion as WE KNEW that all the claims of Blair and Bush were false.

Dear Congressman,

This could potentially be key to uncovering more solid proof that the "intelligence and facts were being fixed around the policy". Might I suggest that someone from your staff try to contact Mr. Marshall directly and see if there is something more substantive he wishes to divulge.

I agree that this could be the most damning evidence so far if it is traced back to the administration. But don't get ahead of ourselves, so far it's just a theory.

If Mr. Marshall is just blowing smoke we need to know early so we can focus on other things.

You have an interesting style of debate, very similar to that of Bush, Cheney, Frist, Delay, and Sensenbrenner. And I mean that with all due respect. If you'll permit me a typical long-winded scenario, I'll explain my comment.

A gentleman stands up in the Senate, seeks five minutes of time, and offers some commentary regarding concerns over how a potential Bill will affect the poor and downtrodden in his state. Immediately following, a series of opponents arise and begin to use very derogatory terms to describe the "obviously flawed mentality" of the individual, as well as their being on the "wrong" side of the political spectrum. Rather than offer conflicting information, charts that question the relevance of the speakers information, the 'SPEAKER' is insulted, castigated, and criticized...not the policy offered.

I, for one, do not think that a speaker should suffer insults for offering policy. I think that policy should be met with rebuttal, evidence, and opinion that is offered as opinion. Whether that speaker was a Republican or Democrat, whether a conservative or liberal should not change or affect the level of respect we 'should' exhibit for people who offer opinions.

I, too, think that some of the opinions offered here are presented as fact, but I also know that this site is clearly a haven for the more democrat-oriented crowd. This site also purports to be in search of truths. I imagine that sites like BlogsForBush also purport to be a site of truth. Yet, even with my generally respectful style, I am banned from such places. They do not allow dissenting opinion, so I read and scratch my head at the one-sidedness of the whole site. You are not banned from here, at least not yet, unless (I imagine) you resort to previously noted disrespect.

I would relish your opinions (well maybe not relish) but would certainly be willing to listen to them. You believe Bush is innocent of all wrong-doing. You believe that the “Liberals” are the cause of all political problems. You don’t believe any of the conspiracy theories. Enjoy your beliefs, you are entitled to them. But when others decide to have conspiracy theories, you choose to insult them rather than offer evidence in the other direction. You seem to consider opinions on this blog as part of “sore-loser-it is, sour grapes, obstructionism, and allow for no possible tidbit of truth. I guess that in your eyes, Bush may be the second coming. Someone got the scent of Clinton up to no good behind closed doors, and the majority (at the time republicans) decided that his transgression was worthy of impeachment. But you can’t fathom that Bush can do any wrong.

Maybe this site isn’t for you. People here are unhappy with the current state of affairs. You aren’t going to change any ones mind, particularly with your style of argument and insult. Can’t you let us be unhappy in peace? Why does the consensus on this site bother you so much? What makes you stay? Surely it can’t be for debate, since you choose not to do so. Is it to get under the skin of the ‘regulars’? Then you have succeeded! Congratulations! Please just remember, as you post repeatedly on this site, that you are not taken seriously as a source of information, only as a source of annoyance. Don't forget that Cooper also talked with Scooter Libby for his story, but Libby gave permission to talk about him. Rove apparently didn't give permission, although the Newsweek article claims he signed permission for the grand jury for anyone to be able to talk about him when he testified. Maybe the lawyers sympathetic to the WH are talking about Rove to keep attention away from Scooter Libby and Cheney. It's just a thought.

#13 Patriot - We knew that all the claims were wrong as we had refugees from Iraq in our town, and as much as they did not like Saddam, they were at the forefront of the Anti War protests. We listened to them. They were not political and power climbers like Ahmed Chalabi. They were those who suffered.

As regards proof, Robin Cook, Clare Short, George Galloway and many more leading British politicians, all gave sufficient evidence to try and stop this war as they were insiders who came out and spoke against Blair. They would not have done this UNLESS they had specific information. We listened and learnt and that was why we protested.

Further, we listened to people like Scott Ritter, Hans Blix, El Baradei. Joe Wilson and we knew that Colin Powell was lying through his teeth when he spoke at the UN.

If the US could hone in on specific conversations between two Iraqi soldiers about WMD, they would have known where the weapons were. That was the biggest faked item of all presented in the UN by Colin Powell and NOT ONE WORD so far has been said about that!!

Exactly what is your motive here?

The Democratic Party is the party of the PEOPLE.

The Republican Party on the other hand appears to be the party of big business, distain for the rule of law, corruption and kickbacks, manipulation of facts, mass murder, racial and religious divide, environmental and humanitarian destruction, stacking the courts, nuclear war, world poverty and hunger, denial of veteran's benefits, or for that matter even supplying the troops with what they neet to win a war, etc.

My point being, everything you post here is against the PEOPLE of the United States.

Perhaps you're relying upon the Rapture or you're so unhappy with your fellow citizens of this country that you're moving abroad?

Yeah, I saw that photo last night on Daily Kos. They had some excellent threads going. Did you see the one with Karl on the throne? ROTFLMAO I still can't get that image out of my head.

It will certainly be interesting watching all these criminal fools dance around the evidence. Gives a whole new meaning to 'info-entertainment'. Newsweek is working on quite a story.

Sandra, thanks for the note. Weather here has been rainy for a week, but was sunny today. No plans for the 4th, it's a normal work day here. Thanks for the contribution to the site. I hope more peole will contribute to it. Erik is really committed to it, working his tail off. I'm committed to it, too, the programming makes my head somewhat dull, which is why I'm not leaving brilliant commentaries these days (no comment, please, DUmmie).

He's planning a July 23rd rally in Philly. He took those photos on the front of our site. I haven't gotten my photos developed from the Prague rally. Will get paid this week so will try to do that.

Thanks very much! This is really a big story, the website reveals very much about George Bush senior. He financed the Bay of Pigs operatives, a document on the website says he was in CIA then, it says a witness saw Posada at the assination that day, another member of these trained assains was Pardoned by Bush. It tells how Marita testified under oath that she saw Oswald (now proven CIA) with RUBY when the two carloads of agents met in Dallas at a motel, with weapons in their trunks(not charged with perjury by the Jury that found Hunt was in Dallas) and it certainly gives the impression of a coup d etat occurred.

Much of this information is very shocking to some. Might I ask you to post just a short exerpt of the article with the links rather than such long narratives? We are truly dealing with a very corrupt cartell that spands decades. Thankfully, there is a wealth of information on the web to corraborate the evidence. The Quest for the Honest Politician

I sit here in wonderment of the Republican Party. Those guys have all the luck. For 230 years, this country has been involved in a quest to find the most honest, hardworking politician…one who ‘always’ makes the right decision…one who can do no wrong. Finally we’ve found him. Our quest is complete! We’ve found the “Holy Grail”, and his name is George W. Bush; “Man of the Millennium”.

From the moment of his birth, this boy never once wet his diaper; never once required potty training, and never even farted. Every decision he made, whether as a child, an adolescent, or a man, has been the right one. Any time there were problems, it always ended up the fault of those around him…never his responsibility. Whether it was ‘second hand’ marijuana smoke, or someone just poured alcohol down his throat, he wasn’t responsible. When that damned pretzel almost choked him, I contemplated suing Bachmann.

I wish I had a life like his. I think that Democrats are just jealous of his ability to be “on target” all the time, of the fact that his decisions always turn out faultless regardless of the appearance of error. There was one odd moment in time where I thought he almost tripped, but it was probably just a loose plank on the porch of the White House.

He is so flawless, so perfect, that not one of his proponents can fathom the possibility of a mistake in judgment, an inkling of impropriety. Nixon was a close second. The only reason he wasn’t as perfect as ‘Dubya’ was because of that son-of-a-bitch traitor Mark Felt, who, like the loser he is, decided that integrity was more important than the man. “LOSER”. Maybe its just that the Democrats are pessimists...always seeing the negative side of things. I can think of so many times those imbeciles tried to demean George, make it like he was up to no good. HOW DARE THEY. “Dubya” would never, ever do anything wrong. He would never, ever abuse his power. He would never, ever try to pack the court, lie about an agenda for war, give tax breaks to the rich, cover for his peers, and steal an election (or two). He would never, ever under-fund the veterans association, never send our soldiers off to war and leave them unprotected, and never enter into deals that favor big business at the expense of the ‘little-guy’. He would never knowingly surround himself with criminals like Tom Delay of “Abramoff fame, or Karl Rove of Plame-Gate fame, or Albert Gonzales of Gitmo fame, Cheney of “last throes” fame. All of them are at fault, not our Glorious President. He picked good men…they failed him! FOOLS! The blurring of rationale for war, the Downing Street Minutes, historical connections to cartels and terrorists, business failure after business failure; these are all falsehoods perpetrated by the LEFT.

We have found the perfect man, the honest politician. Move over Mr. Smith, “Dubya” is moving in. Even people like ‘Hank’ and ‘Jimmo’ know this. They make it clear to all of us fools that we wouldn’t recognize perfection if it slapped us in the face. The way it sounds to me…Jesus has competition. I just finished reading a FindLaw article from 2003, by John Dean. He talks about the Plame Affair and says if Rove told Chris Mathews that "Wilson's wife is fair game," he may have commited a crime under Title 18 Sec 371 for conspiracy. Dean calls the Plame case the festering thing that could become terminal to Bush's presidency. Could this be why both Bush and Cheney hired criminal lawyers? Rove doesn't even have to be the original leaker, he's in trouble already.

Being from Illinois, too many scandals have occurred from both parties. As far as I'm concerned, the Clintons are untrustworthy. But the Clintons have probably covered their tracks too well to be prosecuted.

Kerry served his country and real Americans are glad he did. But since he's been back, he's been useless as a politician (riding on Kennedy's coattails) and earned the respect of those who spit on other returning Vietnam vets. How about the lies CBS tried to pull with Bush?

True conservatives will not give a cent to pointless gossip about Hillary. It's on par with the tripe written about the Bushes by Kitty Kelly. Hillary's socialism will be her undoing.

What information, the nothing that is the DSM? Who was attacked on 9/11? Even if Saddam didn't have first-hand knowledge of the attack, there's enough information showing him involved with Al Qaeda prior to 9/11 and protecting them after. Yet Saddam is given a pass. Why? Answer me that one.

Who was attacked on 9/11? We were, by bin Laden. Saddam's involvement with Al Qaeda has been shown to be non-material. Saddam has not been given a 'free pass'. He's been under sanctions and carefully watched, and bombed on several occasions, along with being hit with UN resolutions.

"Free Pass" suggests that he'd be let off free to do whatever he wished. That is not the case.

And war was not the solution, it was illegal, Bush knew it was illegal, you even know it was illegal. The entire world knows that war was illegal.

You're putting a spin on the facts, to make them suit your needs. Why not look at them at face value?

Did Bush lie? Answer me that one.

Concerning Rese #48, a lot of this is true though much of what he says is exaggerated. One interesting fact is that the final report on Gore winning the popular vote came out just about on 9/11, and got completely buried, of course. This is true.

Bush and the group are extremely sordid criminals, but this is nothing new in politics. The fact that some force is working against them now is encouraging. Throughout history, corrupt leaders have been brought down. It's always happening.

Torqued #52 is right on the fake uranium deals... connected to the Israeli spies who were caught a while back, if you remember. This information is surfacing and the whole plot might be uncovered. I'll look for the links on this and post them later.

According to author and journalist Mickey Herskowitz, then presidential candidate George W. Bush was already talking privately about the political benefits of attacking Iraq two years before September 11 occurred.

"He was thinking about invading Iraq in 1999," said President Bush's former ghost writer.

"It was on his mind. He said to me: 'One of the keys to being seen as a great leader is to be seen as a commander-in-chief.' And he said, 'My father had all this political capital built up when he drove the Iraqis out of Kuwait and he wasted it.' He said, 'If I have a chance to invade, if I had that much capital, I'm not going to waste it. I'm going to get everything passed that I want to get passed and I'm going to have a successful presidency."

Herskowitz said that Bush expressed frustration at a lifetime as an underachiever in the shadow of an accomplished father. In aggressive military action, he saw the opportunity to emerge from his father's shadow. The moment, Herskowitz said, came in the wake of the September 11 attacks. "Suddenly, he's at 91 percent in the polls, and he'd barely crawled out of the bunker."

In 1999, Herskowitz struck a deal with the campaign of George W. Bush about a ghost-written autobiography, which was ultimately titled A Charge to Keep : My Journey to the White House, and he and Bush signed a contract in which the two would split the proceeds.

Herskowitz was given unimpeded access to Bush, and the two met approximately 20 times so Bush could share his thoughts. Herskowitz began working on the book in May, 1999, and says that within two months he had completed and submitted some 10 chapters, with a remaining 4-6 chapters still on his computer. Herskowitz was replaced as Bush's ghostwriter after Bush's handlers concluded that the candidate's views and life experiences were not being cast in a sufficiently positive light.

Bush's attitude toward Iraq emerged recently in two taped interviews of Herskowitz revealing the following:

- In 2003, Bush's father indicated to him that he disagreed with his son's invasion of Iraq.

- Bush admitted that he failed to fulfill his Vietnam-era domestic National Guard service obligation, but claimed that he had been "excused."

- Bush revealed that after he left his Texas National Guard unit in 1972 under murky circumstances, he never piloted a plane again.

- Bush described his own business ventures as "floundering" before campaign officials insisted on recasting them in a positive light.

According to Herskowitz, George W. Bush's beliefs on Iraq were based in part on a notion dating back to the Reagan White House - ascribed in part to now-vice president Dick Cheney, Chairman of the House Republican Policy Committee under Reagan. "Start a small war. Pick a country where there is justification you can jump on, go ahead and invade."

Bush's circle of pre-election advisers had a fixation on the political capital that British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher collected from the Falklands War. Said Herskowitz: "They were just absolutely blown away, just enthralled by the scenes of the troops coming back, of the boats, people throwing flowers at [Thatcher] and her getting these standing ovations in Parliament and making these magnificent speeches."

Republicans, Herskowitz said, felt that Jimmy Carter's political downfall could be attributed largely to his failure to wage a war. He noted that President Reagan and President Bush's father himself had (besides the narrowly-focused Gulf War I) successfully waged limited wars against tiny opponents - Grenada and Panama - and gained politically. But there were successful small wars, and then there were quagmires, and apparently George H.W. Bush and his son did not see eye to eye.

"I know [Bush senior] would not admit this now, but he was opposed to it. I asked him if he had talked to W about invading Iraq. "He said, 'No I haven't, and I won't, but Brent [Scowcroft] has.' Brent would not have talked to him without the old man's okaying it." Scowcroft, national security adviser in the elder Bush's administration, penned a highly publicized warning to George W. Bush about the perils of an invasion.

Other indications on the direction George W. Bush was about to take came in December 1999, when he surprised veteran political chroniclers, including the Boston Globe 's David Nyhan, with his blunt pronouncements about Saddam at a six-way New Hampshire primary event that got little notice:

"It was a gaffe-free evening for the rookie front-runner, till he was asked about Saddam's weapons stash," wrote Nyhan. 'I'd take 'em out,' [Bush] grinned cavalierly, 'take out the weapons of mass destruction, I'm surprised he's still there," said Bush of Saddam Hussein. It remains to be seen if that offhand declaration of war was just Texas talk, a sort of locker room braggadocio, or whether it was Bush's first big clinker. "

The notion that President Bush held unrealistic or naïve views about the consequences of war was further advanced recently by a Bush supporter, the evangelist Pat Robertson, who revealed that Bush had told him the Iraq invasion would yield no casualties.

In the end, campaign officials decided not to go with Herskowitz's account, and, moreover, demanded everything back. "The lawyer called me and said, 'Delete it. Shred it. Just do it.'

Read the Sermon on the Mount, Stuffy, and tell us if you can find any Republican policies in it.
Read the Constitution, and tell us where it says that opposing a president's policies is "obstructionism."

The multinational military force I believe was part of the European Union Constitution. It is at least the plan, meaning that if any one country went to war troops from any of the others could be called. And whoever was in charge had control of this massive force to use at will. My point is this. Why is it mendacity to ask a question. And when the very first question was not answered, and the asker insulted, why was it mendacity to ask the next. And when the next question was not answered, and the asker insulted, why was it mendacity to ask the next. I think the Old Testament said something about not questioning God...I don't hink I saw Bush's name in there.

When Clinton was asked about his sexual misbehavior, and his answer was "questionable", people became more determined to ask again.

Why do you, or any republicans, believe that Lord Bush is untouchable and should never be asked any questions. The "Uniter...not Divider", has chosen a rather divisive path in this presidency from the moment he stole into the White House (pun intended!) As my posting #50 points out, there are multiple issues that have arisen (as do with every president). Why is Bush untouchable.

If the Downing Street Minutes came out during the Clinton administration, wouldn't the republicans be setting up the new Starr commission yesterday? Read Bushes comments on the Kosovo confllict and his belief that Clinton needed an exit strategy (a conflict where not one american was killed in combat). Why can't good Americans (and not just Bush) say they want one too. And, in relation to the DSMinutes, whether a smoking gun or nothing, or the Bin Laden family given flight to leave America within 24 hours after 9-11 with no interrogation...can no one ask what this means?

You see, stoufi1, for some reason Bush has achieved that glorious position that what is good for the goose (ex. Clinton), is NOT good for the gander.

No questions please...and if you ask, I'll insult your mother! I've tried to offer reasonable questions to people on this site, I will do the same with you.

1. Is it wrong to ask a president a question?

2. Is it wrong to ask a president a question regarding a finding that may be problematic for the president?

3. Should all questioners be insulted, demeaned, and lumped into groups with nasty names spoken with sneering faces?

4. When responses do come, and they come as negating, unclear answers, can't people ask again (we did this with Clinton)?

5. After a while, shouldn't committees be formed to seek answers, since the current responses are not forthcoming, and the questions are treated as if they are irrelevant (even though they may be, we still have a right to ask them). (ps. Clinton was not 'found' guilty in the Whitewater investigation...but the investigation had to go on in order to find this out (at the expense to the American public of 40 million dollars).

6. If the downing Street Minutes are given the same respect, particularly due to their implications...or Rove-gate, or Halliburton, or Delay, or allowing Osama to escape, etc...WHEN can we ask questions and seek answers...never? And why, because he was elected. Being elected does not typically have 'that' rider attached.

In September, 2002, President Bush spoke to the UN regarding Iraq. His second point (after WMD, which everybody got wrong) was:

"If the Iraqi regime wishes peace, it will immediately end all support for terrorism and act to suppress it, as all states are required to do by U.N. Security Council resolutions."

Clearly, Hussein supported terrorism and harbored Al Qaeda until he was removed from power. And, considering how much he was allowed to steal through Oil-For-Food (and keep his people in starvation), he wasn't only given a free pass, he was getting paid. Did Bush lie? No.

Saddam was boxed in. And the UN (led by France, Germany, Russia, and China) was slowly loosening our grip on him to the point where he would have been able to rebuild his terrorist state and create a dynasty, ala Kim Il Sung.

North Korea is more dangerous today thanks to the extortion paid by the American taxpayer through Bill Clinton. Iran is more dangerous, yet it is beset by pro-democracy demonstrations and is surrounded by regimes it can't control anymore.

Republicans are a sordid party of corruption, etc.? Have you bothered to read about Democrats and what goes on in Chicago or Cook County? We in Illinois know that corruption crosses party lines. First, the White House is desperate to "plug the leaks" at the CIA. The Agency has been scapegoated by the White House and its Congressional toadies, like Goss and California Republican Duncan Hunter, for the 9/11 attacks and for the failure to find the so-called Iraqi weapons of mass destruction. Senior career intelligence officers are furious, according to the sources, at the White House's blame game, and they do not intend to sit by and allow this propaganda scam to go unchallenged. The fact that evidence points to Cheney as the culprit behind the July 2003 leaking of the identity of CIA "non-official cover" officer Valerie Plame to columnist Robert Novak, only deepens the intelligence community's fury at the Bush White House. And Goss's personal role in attempting to prevent an independent counsel probe into the Plame leak just adds to the volatility of the issue.

The spy community knows that evidence easily accessible in the public domain reveals that the President, the Vice President, and the Attorney General repeatedly ignored CIA and FBI warnings about an imminent terrorist attack on U.S. soil in the Spring-Summer 2001, including the now-famous Aug. 6, 2001 Presidential Daily Briefing item, talking about al-Qaeda hijacking plots and surveillance of targets in Washington and New York. Likewise, the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence's recent report documented that the majority of intelligence community analysts disputed the Iraq WMD threat; and former DCI George Tenet told an audience at Georgetown University earlier this year that Iraq "never posed an imminent threat" to the United States—and he told Bush and Cheney that on repeated occasions.

When the CIA General Counsel rushed through approval of a book, Imperial Hubris, by a senior Agency counterterrorism analyst, writing anonymously, which tore into the Administration's failed Iraq and Afghanistan policies, Cheney and company moved to pre-empt further damaging material from surfacing from the Agency—by naming Goss. Goss's first mission will be to plug the leaks—at least through November.

Second, the Bush-Cheney campaign is growing worried that the President could lose the must-win state of Florida in November, and the Goss nomination is aimed at bolstering enthusiasm among the Cuban-American right-wing community in Miami for a second Bush-Cheney term. Goss is the darling of the southern Florida right wing, and has been, dating back to his CIA days from 1961-71, when he participated in the efforts to assassinate or overthrow Fidel Castro in Havana.

Third, and most important for Cheney, Goss is the personification of the rogue spook, serving at the pleasure of the President, and behind the back of the Congress and the American people. In Cheney's warped mind, Goss is going to turn the clock back to the bad-old-days before Watergate and intelligence oversight.

So much has been documented on this, that it is nearly impossible to "fix the facts" without further implicating themselves but it will be spun in desperation and covered up best they can. It will be apparent who is being protected, immediately and repeatedly, so...

Keep your eye on tricky Dick Cheney as this scandal unfolds.

Cheney is the one at the top who orchestrated the fixed intelligence campaign at the CIA. Cheney's numerous visits to the CIA along with his personal handling of personnel, including Goss and subordinates are well known and documented early on, when leaks were very common within the agency.

Ray McGovern, retired 27 year CIA analyst has stated that VP Cheney's visits to the agency are "unprecedented" and has laid out the facts very clearly on the various roles of the neocon cabal.

Keep your eye on Cheney, Goss, Bolton, and Roverer. You won't be disappointed.

- "Clearly?" Where are you getting your information? From O'Reilly? You need an update, bucko. There was no significant connection between Saddam and Al Qaeda. The administration has admitted it.

Did Bush lie?
- Bush said he was doing everything possible to prevent war. Did he do everything possible to prevent war, ie allow the weapons inspectors to complete their missions? Did he take out Zarqawi when he had the chance, to help prevent war? Did he lie?

He said he did not want to go to war. Did he want to go to war? Did he lie?

Did Bush lie? Yes, he lied.
- There were no WMDs.
- There was no real connection between Saddam and Al Qaeda.
- There was no connection between Saddam and 9/11.
- He didn't do everything possible to prevent war.
- He really did want to go to war.

Bush lied. You know he lied. The world knows he lied. And to state anything otherwise means you are lying, too.

The Government of the US realized in 1983 when the Battleship New Jersey bombarded residential neighborhoods in Beirut Lebanon in retaliation for the USMC barracks bombing that Americans would allow anything given reason for revenge. They learned that lesson and they will not forget it.

It is my conviction that we can only face down China and/or India by threatening Nuclear war hence this administrations refusal to reduce nuclear arsenals.
It scares me when I hear Dick Cheney state (and others before him) that "the lifestyle of Americans is not negotiable"
This is why we are in Iraq - purely and simply to establish a military presence that can be used as a "tripwire" to disuade others from claiming "Our Oil."
I suggest that we face the fact now that the era of cheap energy is over and we need to adapt to that reality.

What were our Government's intentions BEFORE 9/11?

Reporter Ron Suskind said that he received documents from "White House Insiders", including Paul O'Neill. The titles of those documents were as follows:

"Plan for Post-Saddam Iraq."
"Foreign Suitors For Iraqi Oilfield Contracts"

Paul O'Neill himself described a meeting that took place a few days after the first inauguration where "It was all about finding a way to do it. That was the tone of it. The president saying 'Go find me a way to do this."

What about Afghanistan? Would we have invaded Afghanistan had it not been for 9/11?

According to BBC's George Arney, Niaz Naik, a former Pakistani Foreign Secretary, was told by senior American officials in mid-July that military action against Afghanistan would go ahead by the middle of October.

Just yesterday, Rep. Peter King said, "We would not have invaded Iraq without 9/11".

According to Bob Woodward's book, "Plan Of Attack", Paul Wolfowitz said, "The terrorist attacks of Sept 11 created an opportunity to strike."

So... were they hoping and praying that 9/11 would take place, or did they make it happen?

I've prayed my ass off before to a God I no longer believe in, but I can honestly say that a massive attack against the United States, in the timeframe that they specified, is a tad more than any God could give.

p.s. It was during 1971 via Nixon that the Brenton Woods System was abolished which set about the current situation we are in.

I strongly believe Bush will be removed very similar to how Nixon was.

Man it's crazy for sure. More attention is paid to soaps and run away brides than to the issues that signal disaster around the corner. The dumbing down of America has been a succesful campaign so far. Hopefully with the power of the internet, that will change rapidly before it's too late.

I am still trying to figure out how other than outright voter fraud in Ohio, W got er, re-elected. I say this as he was never elected president in 2000. He was appointed by the Supreme Court which has stepped in its own crap last week with the head up a.. (HUA) decision on eminent domain. How can these middle class people in so called 'Red' states vote for a party that has absolutely nothing in common with them and has irreversably shoved it up their collective tails with passing laws like the Bankrupcy Act? Hell, anyone who occasionally watches CSPAN and/or CSPAN2 will see what they are doing. Tnen again, the average IQ in the U.S. is somewhere around 90 or lower. Like was noted above, they have certainly been successful in dumbing down America.
I think Reichmarshall Rove should be put on trial for treason.

While I'll admit there has been a vast dumbing down of America and so many uneducated have fallen for the propaganda...don't take for granted that they are all 'red states'.

Here in Florida where our votes haven't been counted for years we have suffered under the last four elections which were stolen by the neo-cons; their criminal connections run all the way back to the Bay of Pigs.

I'm really shocked & disturbed about something which I believe deserves prompt investigation.

I've read recent reports all over about H. W. Bush knowing about the John F. Kennedy assassination and even ordering to having it covered up. I've always suspected it was a CIA initiated coverup.

I've just never known about who might have done it, although John Hinckley was a suspect. Apparently Hinckley met with Bush at least several times in Dallas, so to me he seems like a smokescreen guy. I read a report which speculated how Kennedy might have been killed by the limosuine driver. But this next step is just what floors me.

The following image I captured from a live documentary of the John F. Kennedy shooting following the black sedan down a road in 1963. You can clearly see when you look that it was in fact Secret Service Agent William Greer who aimed a gun directly at Kennedy's head and shot him!

Amazingly, if you look at his eyes he is actually looking up towards the camera and his arm is back around the chair. I've included two distinct shots which show the crime, but if you blow it up in Adobe Photoshop or Paint you can see it even clearer.

This has been a coverup since day one, and since Greer is now dead I would think there would be some witnesses who know something big about this case. Like who in the world ordered Greer to do it, it was supposed to be someone in the free mason society. But with this thing and Hinckley having made an attempt earlier, I smell the elder Bush all over it. Especially given the leaked government document that just recently showed Elder Bush had a telephone conversation in Dallas regarding this.

And knew it was absolute suicide to let Kennedy go out, yet he did not a thing to stop it. My guess is there is a whole tentacle connected to these guys that we could unlock if there was access to the files. Greer fired the shot though, because the place he points the gun is nowhere near where any assassins would be. It has to absolutely be shooting right at him. I'm astonished the media has never, ever reported it. I think the truth is what the americans deserve. DSM was just the tip of the iceberg wasn't it.

Senator Arlen Spector would know quite alot about this, wouldn't he? I wonder if it would be possible to re-open the files of this investigation and find out what our so called "civil servants" really know. It would close a chapter in tragic history, to know the truth about who ordered JFK to be killed.

These same Jesuits were responsible for ghost writing Mein Camp, creating Zionism, and killing any "white Pope" that tried to disband them. Their ultimate gain: control of Jerusalem.

9/11 was orchestrated by them to get public support to fight to help get Israel the oil it lost from the Iranian revolution.

The recent Supreme Court ruling that private property can be taken by private profiteers, if they will increase the taxes, is an example of just how the American people are being ripped off by these elite.

Private developers, (foreigners) will eventually own the prime real estate through this law. Goodby Florida Keys mobile home parks, hello foreign resort owners, and condo builders. It doesn't matter to the Supreme Court that many Veterans live in them. They receive "just compensation" and be forced to go live in the deserts.

These Supreme Copurt judges should be impeached, along with the President and his administrators who are treasonous to America.

We smell the smoke but if you think it's only a gun you are wrong.

Separate the two words "facts" and "intelligence" and see what you get when you add "fixed".

1. the intelligence was fixed. This explains much.

2. the FACTS were fixed.

Ladies and gentlemen, this is the smoking jet airliner, a cannon, a guided missile.

Meanwhile the Democrats have only 8 hits in the House Record on the subject of "downing street memo" in the 109th Congress. (One more hit on "downing street minutes" in the Senate, I believe.)

By way of contrast, the Republicans made sure there were 800 hits in the Record on "whitewater" in the 103rd and 104th Congress.

Former foes Iran and Iraq have said they will sign a military cooperation agreement that will include Iranian help in training Iraq's armed forces.

The agreement marks a considerable advance in relations between the two countries that fought a bitter 1980-1988 war and comes despite repeated US accusations that Iran has undermined security in Iraq since the fall of Saddam Hussein in 2003.

"It's a new chapter in our relations with Iraq. We will start wide defence cooperation," Iranian Defence Minister Admiral Ali Shamkhani told a joint news conference with visiting Iraqi counterpart Sadoun al-Dulaimi.

"We're going to form some committees which will be involved in mine clearance, identifying those missing from the war and also ... to help train, rebuild and modernise the Iraqi army," Shamkhani added.

Iran last year offered to train Iraqi border guards, but Baghdad declined the offer.

Meddling accusation

US and Iraqi officials have often accused Iran of stirring up instability in Iraq. Tehran denies meddling in Iraq or helping, arming or letting foreign fighters cross its borders.

Asked about possible US opposition to Iran-Iraq military cooperation, Shamkhani said: "No one can prevent us from reaching an agreement."

The US military has signed on Halliburton to do nearly $5 billion in new work in Iraq under a giant logistics contract that has so far earned the Texas-based firm $9.1 billion.

Linda Theis, a spokeswoman for US Army Field Support Command in Rock Island, Illinois, said on Wednesday that the military signed the work order with Halliburton unit Kellogg Brown and Root in May.

The new deal, worth $4.97 billion over the next year, was not made public when it was signed because the Army did not consider such an announcement necessary, she said.

What Rumsfeld didn't elaborate on was where China has acquired much of its military technology from and how "America's strategic partner" had violated several American laws on the export and third party transfer of critical military technologies.

Although Russian technology plays a part in its programmes, much of China's advanced technology has come from the Israelis, who have often sold their own technology or American technology that was given to them.

The Use of undemocratic principles does not spread democracy. It spreads hatred of the US.

On June 24, Yasser Salihee, an Iraqi special correspondent for the news agency Knight Ridder, was killed by a single bullet to the head as he approached a checkpoint that had been thrown up near his home in western Baghdad by US and Iraqi troops. It is believed that the shot was fired by an American sniper. According to eyewitnesses, no warning shots were fired.

The US military has announced it is conducting an investigation into Salihee’s killing. Knight Ridder has already declared, however, that “there’s no reason to think that the shooting had anything to do with his reporting work”. In fact, his last assignment gives reason to suspect that it was.

Over the past month, Salihee had been gathering evidence that US-backed Iraqi forces have been carrying out extra-judicial killings of alleged members and supporters of the anti-occupation resistance.

His investigation followed a feature in the New York Times magazine in May [The Way of the Commandos], detailing how the US military had modeled the Iraqi interior ministry police commandos, known as the Wolf Brigade, on the death squads unleashed in the 1980s to crush the left-wing insurgency in El Salvador. "
