Another Day Hard at Work on the Blogosphere
Are We Nearing the Tipping Point on the Smoking Gun Downing Street Memo?

I want to thank all of you who participated in the on-line chat by Louise Slaughter and myself care of the DCCC. For those who logged on at 3 PM, I apologize again. We had such an overwhelming response that our computers crashed. Around 3:15, when we were about ready to go, there was a fire alarm at the DCCC. Finally, we got started around 3:30 and were able to go for a full hour. The chat is currently archived at democraticaction.org in case you missed it and want to check it out. I would be interested in all of your thoughts regarding what worked and what didn't work for future reference, as I would like to do more of these. (A special thanks to Jesse Lee for helping making this event happen.)

Second, Arianna Huffington's blog is now up, and I have two entries -- one concerning the smoking gun memo -- a featured blog -- and another responding to Jim Lampley's posting concerning election fraud. Check them out if you can at huffingtonpost.com.

Finally, I noticed on Buzzflash a shortwhile ago that their top story is on the lack of media coverage of the Downing Street Memo, and includes a great piece by Fairness and Accuracy In Media Reporting (FAIR). While I agree with the thrust of the piece, at the same time, I have been getting more press inquiries on this scandal as of late. I'll keep you apprised as these pieces run and the story develops further.

Dear Congressman Conyers,

I don't trust the RNC at all and I do not support the decisions of this current administration. I have many, many questions regarding 911, AIPAC, Patriot Act, Abu Ghraib, the Iraq War, 2004 election results, upcoming wars that may be planned, PNAC, and a plethora of other items.

I have been and continue to be supportive of your actions to bring transparency, media attention and scrutiny to these issues.

HOWEVER, even with this support of your actions, I do not trust the DNC any more than I do the RNC. I don't trust ANYONE in Washington. It is clear to me that most politicians have monetary ties to institutuions that present unbelievable conflicts of interests to the American people. Every member of the 911 commission was comprimised by these types of conflicts. EVERYONE - Republican and Democrat alike.

These two parties, one of which you are a part of, have done nothing but pull the wool over the eyes of the American people for far to long.

If you are the man of truth that you are currently representing yourself as, I hope you will begin to bring to the forefront this travesty of justice, this insult to our "freedoms" (ha, we have none left under the Orwellian named Patriot Act) and our Constitution, this unabashed debasement of the very values our framers held dear, and speak out against the Corpratization and Anti-American People policies that BOTH parties have been implementing and promoting for many decades now.

Without this level of honesty, you are just the opposing voice in another Hegelian play put on by Washington, DC in hopes of entrancing the American people so that the status quo can continue to add money to their coffers at the expense of the American people.

$72M in BONUSES to Halliburton for what they've "done" in Iraq. Can we all say "wealth transfer" together?

I support your current actions, but am looking to you for much, much more.

Sincerely,

Ex-Michigander

I really appreciated the opportunity to participate in today's chat (and your choice to begin with a question I'd submitted!). I'm a member of democraticunderground, and folks there were having a hard time logging onto the chat, so I pasted each Q&A into a thread on DU as it came up on the chat window.

A couple of suggestions for future chats:

About content: it'd be great to have the opportunity for follow-up questions to help deepen the dialogue.

About format: it was very difficult to find the new material as it often came up in-between questions that were already posted. I'd recommend a blog format where the newest additions go to the top, if at all possible. Second choice, new additions at the bottom.

I am a professional transcriptionist and type very fast. I'd be happy to help with future chats if that would be useful.

Dear Congressman Conyers,

This is the first time I see your website, so I've just realized that I missed the chat. I wish I could be there "live" (I will make sure to read the archived chat).

How can I find out about those chats in the future? When is there going to be another chat? And do the chats have certain themes?

Sincerely,

Thanks for the email headsup about the chat...... unfortunately, I was unable to participate.

However, I wanted to respond to your statement that you're getting more press inquiries.

On Monday, I was upset that there was no article about the Memo in the Sunday Denver Post, so I called and spoke with a wire editor. He asked for more info, and ...... sure enough, printed an article on Tuesday, page 14A. Yes, could have been better, but at least there was response. Now I'm trying to get folks to write LTTEs to bring attention to your letter. Hopefully, that will bring you a call from the Denver Post.

I must join the chorus... thanks so much for all you're doing! You're a true patriot!

Good point about corruption in both parties.

Lack of Dem outrage about the "Stolen Election" seems to make this painfully clear, as did the whitewashing apparently done by 911 Commission and made even more grotesque by recent revalations in Britain.

It seems the media are not as collusive in Britain as they are in the US - let's not forget their role in all this.

But the bottom line, so to speak, is that both parties are heavily financed by Big Money and Big Money has been getting most of what it wants for a long time.

Changing that will take a level of patriotism amongst the people rather different from the nationalism that points the finger of blame. It would be a kind of patriotism that would inspire people to a more active role in their governance and their media, an active role not to demand more and more servile extremism, but to demand more and more information, fairness, wisdom and balance.

If we choose to, We The People can make Big Money just part of the mix, as it should be, and not the tail that wags the dog. We can do this by taking our rightful place, by remembering that the Constitution is basically the words We The People plus a whole lot of fine print.

On my blog, I keep asking where the main stream media is on the "leaked memo". Why hasn't CNN, CBS, NBC, ABC, etc. jumped all over this story. Are they all that afraid of the White House? It's not a big secret. I want answers.

Someone needs to ask for an independent council to look into this ASAP.

Comment #10: Susan said on 5/11/05 @ 11:39am ET...

Thank you, Rep. Conyers, for continuing to push for exposure of this British intelligence memo. Until this reaches the MSM, we will continue to have HALF of the American people who still won't admit, or do not even know, that they were lied to about the Iraq debacle.

Only when they understand this mendacity will they begin to understand what has happened to them and their trust.

Dear Congressman Conyers,

I saw your blogs on the Huffington Post and I appreciate your points of view and investigative reporting.

Do you feel that enough publicity of this issue will get an investigation going on in the House that is controlled by Republicans?

I live in the LA area so I'll write the LA Times to see if they will look into this.

Is there other course(s) of action that citizens can be involved in to help move this along?

Comment #15: Hank said on 5/11/05 @ 4:30pm ET...

Rick:

Yes there is a course of action that citizens can be involved in to help move things along: Just go the the blog main page and make a CONTRIBUTION to John Conyers like he is asking you to do!

MONEY TALKS!

Comment #16: Susan said on 5/11/05 @ 4:46pm ET...

To "Hank":

After 41 years of dedicated service to the American people (and the lucky constituants in Michigan), you have the incredible nerve to question the motives of a true patriot like John Conyers, Jr. Shame on you.

Contributions to get to the bottom of whether our allegedly democratic elections have been compromised are insignificant compared to the amounts given to bribe the current administration by all manner of the corporate interests.

When citizens contribute to protecting YOUR RIGHTS you offer sarcasm about their efforts. If our electoral system stands up to any and all investigation, we gain confidence in it and we all benefit. Unless you believe there is danger in scrutinizing these issues, you should be grateful, as a citizen, to Rep. Conyers for protecting the sanctity of your vote.

Comment #17: Paine said on 5/11/05 @ 5:24pm ET...

I've got an idea, Hank. If raising money is so evil to you, why don't you quit your job and dispense with yours? Then you can give up that Internet connection of yours and cease posting to sites for which OTHERS pay the bills.

You are here on Mr. Conyers' dime. Perhaps you should appreciate the fact that he allows you to participate here.

For me, I believe that if there are questions about such allegations, then it is the questions that should be addressed, not the integrity of the questioner. If there is no validity to the questions, then honest answers from the administration will reveal that.

Gee, honest answers. What a concept...

I wish the '06 elections were tomorrow. I can't help it, but I have this nagging feeling that the republicans will "wag the dog" very soon. When today's story came out about the white house evacuation, my first assumption was that Bush decided that his numbers got too low, so he'd better create some sense of urgency and fear amongst the people. This action deflects from current failures, distracts from here and now issues, and engenders a sense of loyalty to our brave (ugh) president.

"I found your recent comments from the Huffington etc. via BradBlog.com

"Your mention of the Watergate timeline really delighted me. Actually, I'd like to see this spelled out in more detail... and, of course, I would hope that current concerns progress in the same fashion. Wouldn't I love to watch Cheney resign on national TV!

"From your pic, you look too young to have watched the Watergate Congressional hearings (at least with any knowledge) but I was ~ 22 at the time, and I can tell you this was the best and most riveting reality TV I've ever seen.

"Times have certainly changed since then, but in following various blogs via the internet, I've discovered that I still believe in the W/B (Woodward/Bernstein) model, albeit in altered form. Thus, your Watergate comments struck a chord with me. Oh, BTW, I still want to know who Deep Throat is. If you know, please email me with that information."

I just saw on CNN (we can trust them...can't we?) when the airplane was causing the evacuation of the white house, Bush was busy bike-riding. His staff decided not to tell him of the situation until after his bike-ride was completed. Oy Vay!!

Mr. Conyers, is this appropriate? Seems to me that if there was some concern about a terrorist attack that creates a "RED ALERT", that the President should be informed immediately, and be prepared to make whatever decisions are necessary to protect this nation. I hope someone on "our side" plays this up. If it had been a real emergency, I'd hate to think that Bush couldn't be bothered until he replenished with Gatorade!

Comment #29: Terre said on 5/11/05 @ 10:20pm ET...

Emlev - Your suggestions regarding the chat were good. One I would take issue with, considering time constraints, is taking follow-up questions.

I'm sure they both got a slew of questions that they simply couldn't get to in the time alloted, so it would seem unfair (to me anyway) to give precedence for follow-ups, when questions from other participants go unanswered.

Alan - I only just now saw the CNN article and I'm thrilled. Regarding today's event in the Capitol, let me just say this (and you may call me jaded): My first thought was that this "emergency" was staged, and I told my husband, "Watch, it will turn out to be absolutely nothing, just like the "grenande".

So for me, both events were fabricated to divert attention from your choice of the following - UK Memo, DeLay, Filibuster, Bolton, you name it - yet again.

The bottom line is, how are his constituents fairing in wonderful Detroit? They're going to put a tax on fast food they're so hard up (http://www.detnews.com/2005/metro/0505/11/A02-178362.htm) THAT's your congressman in action!

Comment #32: Susan said on 5/12/05 @ 2:38pm ET...

To "Hank" and now "Bill":

If you think that Rep. Conyers is merely soliciting contributions or his "name in lights", we here believe you are sorely mistaken. We do not share in your cynicism, but, rather, wish to engage on solutions to the sad state of the country under the present mismanagement in all areas, foreign and domestic.

It's the "cash cows" and "smoke and mirrors" we see in government that brings us here.

Rep. Conyers has served his constituants for over forty years. One would think they would have made their minds up about him a long time ago. Your are just nasty because his courage has developed a national following, but I don't believe his constituants would not mind sharing. He addresses their concerns, and, in addition, is such a patriot that he also addresses the broader concerns of our society.

Isn't that what we want our elected representatives to do? Wouldn't we be better off if they all did this?

Comment #34: Aaron said on 5/18/05 @ 12:33am ET...

I agree with the postings that mention how difficult it is at times to trust the government, and I wish that it were easier because the government made it easier. Both our government and its watch dog (the media) lack a decent amount of transparency. The politicians for the most part have worked the system to become corrupt and subservient to more than just the people who voted them in.

It is important, however, to remember that the Fathers of America did not trust the people enough to build an actual democracy - to put the control of the nation's destiny in the people's hands. What we have in America is more appropriately called a republic because the public chooses the people who make the decisions for them. The romantic notion of the New England town hall meeting has no bearing, other then that people vote, on the design of the USA.

The Fathers, for reasons unknown to me, did not trust the people. Regardless to impetus for this sentiment, I am glad that the public does not have the final decision making power in many areas, namely foreign policy and domestic security. The problems of the world that affect our country are infinitely complicated and the vast majority of Americans lack even the basic understandings of these issues and are nowhere near experienced enough in the nuance of dilpomacy to make any choice other then that of who will end up making the important decisions.

Like I previously stated, I find it difficult at times to trust those who are making the important decisions. More transparency and accountability in the government along with reforms like overhauling campaign finance regulations would do a world of good for our system. But until the public produces politicians more concerned with the people's desires then re-election (and it is our responsibility to produce them), I will continue to take refuge in the idea that while making the important decisions, our politicians have spent much more time and effort thinking about the problems then we have.

While Toshiba Corp is an malignant tumor for new U.S. nuke plant.

I agree Ms. Pam Miller with Toshiba Corp's new prototype 4th gen "4S" reactor for Galena, Alaska.
"Why is Toshiba doing this, giving it away for free, trying to foist this experimental technology on rural Alaska when they can't even license this in Japan ?" said Pam Miller, program manager for Alaska Community Action on Toxics, an Anchorage-based environmental group.
You know the reactor came from prototype Monju, Japan by Japanese companies and the plant had still halted for serious 1995's trouble on Toshiba Corp's part or the plant will move soon in 2005 in a controversy. Now Toshiba's nuke scientists could go too hurriedly on their verge. (There would be an mind-control by them in 2005's Diet (Japanese Congress) decision.)

Toshiba persons are morbid liars and it is fatally worse than failure.

Toshiba persons absolutely can lie if any problem will rise on nuke as always, and then unhappiness will come to American people. They will do everything - destruction to rival plants - to protect themselves the last. As fact, in 2002, Japanese American former GE employee Kei Sugaoka reported about concealing problem on Tokyo Electric Power Co (TEPCO) nukes, Japan but nobody said Toshiba spies "TEPCO Nuke Village Employees" concealed it on and Toshiba Corp cleverly pretended TEPCO and Hitachi Ltd led it.
TEPCO opened a video of Hitachi's concealing and Hitachi Ltd informed the participation on Sep 18, 2002 but Toshiba Corp on Nov 16, 2002, while the first accident rised on Fukushima I nuke plant unit 3 by Toshiba Corp Aug 23, 2002. Further, Toshiba Corp touches more many and formerly - 13 plants since 1974 in operational date - than Hitachi Ltd - 9 plants since 1978 in operational date. However, the most important reason why Toshiba Corp spies on TEPCO is Toshiba Corp touches unnaturally all 6 TEPCO's IPPs.
Why don't Americans know such an easy thing ? Americans really have the technology to read and control human minds ?

I investigated a little U.S. nuke and others.

United States' Early Sight Permit (ESP) program started in 2001.
Toshiba Corp, Hitachi Ltd and General Electric Company have completed Tokyo Electric Power Co (TEPCO)'s the first Advanced Boiling Water Reactor (ABWR) type Kashiwazaki Kariwa nuclear power station unit 6, Japan in Nov 1996.
The Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI) and Westinghouse Electric Company still have prepared to construct Korea Hydro&Nuclear Power Co (KHNP)'s the first Advanced Pressurized Water Reactor (APWR or System 80+) type Shin Kori nuclear power station unit 3, South Korea toward Nov 2010 open. Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd (MHI) and Westinghouse Electric Company still have prepared to construct the Japan Atomic Power Company (JAPC)'s the first APWR (or System 80+) type Tsuruga nuclear power station unit 3, Japan toward Mar 2014 open.
So, Toshiba Corp gets a big last chance to win with 3rd generation reactor ABWR although there are 69 PWRs and 35 BWRs - all are 2nd generation reactors - now in USA.

I believe, Toshiba Corp - hungry for money - mind-controlled American President and officials as soon as possible. It was 2001 that Toshiba Corp could mass-mind-control, not pinpoint-mind-control, Americans by stations for Jsat's satellite Jcsat-9 or any other TV broadcasting. (Although Dominion and Exelon were licensed for ESP on Sep 25, 2003 and Entergy, on Oct 21, 2003, I wonder they could do it sooner if there were TEPCO's problem in Jul 2002 and Iraq War in Mar 2003.)
First of all, Toshiba Corp offered in Oct 2003 and so Galena, Alaska, USA admits free Toshiba Corp's experimental 4th gen prototype reactor in Feb 2005. Further, the reactor came from prototype Monju, Japan which had halted until recently for serious 1995's trouble on Toshiba Corp's part. While Americans hate nuclear power terribly as so no licensing was since 1973.
Toshiba Corp got a feasibility study contract for ABWR at Bellefonte site, Alabama, USA from Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) unofficially maybe on Jan 22, 2004 under the name of GE. Although TVA had an strong interest in coal gasification for deferred Bellefonte nuke while 1997 to Aug 2003. Bellefonte is not a ESP site. MHI could have wished for coal gasification at Bellefonte site. MHI sold TVA any equipment for Paradise coal-fired power station unit 3 on Nov 20, 2002.
On Jan 14, 2005, Dominion announced that it had terminated its alliance with Atomic Energy of Canada Limited (AECL), regarding the possible construction of an ACR-700 reactor design, opting instead for a General Electric (GE) design. Dominion stated that the GE design will most likely be the Economic and Simplified Boiling Water Reactor (ESBWR). AECL's ACR-700 partner Hitachi Ltd (Japan) might also be cheated by Toshiba Corp's mind-control. Toshiba Corp joins GE's ESBWR project but Hitachi Ltd joins also the project. People have said Dominion's North Anna nuke, Virginia, USA would be real the first among Early Site Permit (ESP) sites.
I care NuStart Energy's new nuke. There is battle "GE ESBWR vs Westinghouse AP1000".

I believe Toshiba Corp makes nuke boom and oil price's rising since 2004 also in America by mind-control because GE and Westinghouse couldn't prepare it enough.

Please tell me. How did Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) select ABWR (Advanced Boiling Water Reactor) of Toshiba Corp and GE for new Bellefonte nuclear power site, Alabama, USA around Jan 22, 2004 ?
I'm not an anti-nuke activist. I am just interesting in U.S. nuke as an new trace of Toshiba's Mind-control Sales. Toshiba Corp is a real crazy, not the samely as MHI or Hitachi Ltd of Japan.
And I'll never forgive it. Japanese Government may give money for an new Alaskan prototype nuke reactor to Toshiba Corp, an obvious criminal for my case.

And is 2005's Oil price rising for Toshiba's US nuke plan ? I believe GE and Westinghouse can't enough prepare for nuke boom.

Toshiba Corp is so crazy for money.

Toshiba Corp is crazy for money. (But Toshiba's money is shared to Toshiba persons not Toshiba Corp, Toshiba stockholders.)
Crazier for money, next Toshiba President Atsutoshi Nishida, who married an Iranian for Iranian business, is more risky than crazy for money, current Toshiba President Tadashi Okamura.
Now in 2005 yen depreciation begins again. I believe, Toshiba Corp is preparing to sell SED (a kind of FED) display TV set to the World in late 2005, so, Toshiba Corp made 2003 Japan's plasma and LCD display TV set booming to sell Toshiba's display LSI and digital BS tuner inside most of the TV sets.
In 2004 Sony Corp and Mitsubishi Electric Corp could sell FED display TV set and in 2003 Hitachi Ltd and Matsushita Electric Industrial Co could sell Plasma display TV set and before Sharp Corp could sell LCD display TV set, but America still didn't have the TV set booming.

Whoa....got some real kooks on this page.
NEWS ALERT! Mr. Conyers says news media is tabloid journalism (http://www.freep.com/news/statewire/sw116241_20050524.htm). They don't report the "real news" about the government. But he sure liked the "real news" out of Newsweek http://rawstory.com/exclusives/byrne/conyers_newsweek_bush_517). Even after this tabloid-like news is discounted he rallies behind it. Could it be he really has no interest in "the truth" and only is interedted in his Arab support (http://www.adcnj.us/conyers_address.htm). But what of his other consistuents? Oh that's right, they don't own all the gas stations and party store in his district! Maybe he really works fo TOSHIBA (see above post)!!

I have read the Republican blogs. I know that nothing is sacred. I know each side will spin this. I don't care.

All I ask, is that you proceed with equity and judicious resolve. Serve the truth and the law of the land. If there is evidence that our president broke the law in bringing this plague of a war on us, then present the case in such a way that no one can twist it. Make it air-tight. If you can't hit the bull's eye on this one, so that we won't suffer the endless emnity of both sides lying, of both sides trivializing it, making it a stick to beat each other over the head with -- so that we can have justice and closure -- then don't do it.

If you can't do it right, then just let it vanish.

Nevertheless, many of us have known this was all a lie from the start. We've been expecting this revalation, and we want a reckoning. I hope you get the evidence your after, for the sake of both the US and Iraq.

Good luck. Time is not on your side.
