It seems when I am beginning to feel there is *nothing* I can do to take back our Country, take back the media, and take back all that is right and I start to feel NO ONE is listening, along comes John Conyers to the RESCUE! Thank you, Mr. Conyers! There is HOPE!

The story was on the last page of the first section of the KC Star and I heard The Dallas Morning News had a similar inside type of story. The editors seem to want to bury it. As you said, runaway bride and the Jackson trial are front page. I did hear the story talked about on Inside Politics on CNN on their What The Blogs Are Talking About segment. It's been mentioned on Crossfire. Also in some editorials I've read. Falwell and Dobson seem to think the war is "righteous" so who do we impress that the war based on a lie was wrong? It all comes down to the holy war they are dreaming about and not the real lives of the people in Iraq or our soldiers.

Thanks for blogging John Conyers.
I think one of the best things that you could do for this country is to get every member of congress that you know to follow your good example and set up a personal blog with reader comments and teach them to blog for the people every day just like you are doing here.
Please at least get Louise Slaughter set up with a blog by close of business tomorrow.
I see that there are two other members of congress trying to blog at the new Arianna Huffington blog, Sen. Jon Corzine and Rep. Ed Markey. No reader comments yet but I hear they are coming.
This is good but I think they should do like you are doing and set up their own blogs at their own sites with reader comments.
Eventually they will all get a clue and do like you are doing right here.
Thanks for taking the lead in the congressional blogosphere and please keep doing whatever you can to encourage other members of congress to follow your lead.
Anybody reading this please try to do what you can to get your representatives to start blogging today.

Dear Honorable John Conyers,
I wish to deeply thank you for being a shining pillar of truth and a true hero to so many of us who support you and Ms. Slaughter and Ms. Waters.
I personally will continue to make noise on the internet and with any luck I hope to make more.
Thank you dear Sir for being a true representative of the people. I just hope we can save our country in time before more terrible things happen to our people.

Bloggers have already written up the Articles of Impeachment based on these recent revelations.
New Evidence of Conspiracy to Mislead on Iraq Weapons Evidence Warrants Impeachment of George W Bush
A letter to Bush will probably not recieve a reply. We cannot wait for him to hold himself accountable. It is time to push for impeachment, and see which congresspeople are willing to risk their career to defend a sinking ship.

This is a beautifully written piece and very encouraging, Rep. John. I have expected nothing from the media for a very long time. They are under strict orders and are useless. I have always felt manipulated by television and have gotten my news elsewhere for many years. Without the current lockdown this alternative voice would not be emerging so powerfully. The problems in our society have been here for a long time and are now coming into the light. The struggle against this oppression is necessary, I believe, for the motivation for all of us who are aware and care about our country, to act decisively. I have not been involved in politics for a long time, but I certainly will continue with people like you representing me.
You express yourself so well.
And I completely agree with you about the cyclical movement of things. I think the shift is occurring on many subtle levels now. I feel that in some way, the people as a whole in this society feel that they are being misguided.

Mr. Conyers,
You are truly a great man and the American People should be grateful for your hard work and perseverance. It is amazing to see, since the last election, the media finally show their hand. There can be no doubt now that the 4th Estate has been compromised and can no longer be trusted to reflect the true state of affairs and can no longer be trusted to take the risk necessary to bring the truth to the American People. It appears that the media is an active participant in the deception of this war and the deception of Bush Politics. We have Election 2004, we have depleted uranium in Iraq, we have this memo, just to name a few items that the media has failed to report on. When you have access to information that can make clear to the viewer what was and what was not and you do not share that information, then you are a willing participant in the deception. So now the American People need to ask themselves "Why is the media not providing this critical information?" . The media thinks that if they do not lie then that in its self is just....but I argue that not providing information that is factual or evidential, while providing information from unreliable, questionable sources means that in a round about way you too are lying. Therefore "We The People" need to let the media know that we are no longer in the dark regarding their actions. We know they are liars and we know they are not committed to the People but to Corporate America and Bush Politics.

Video - CNN: 90 Dems sign letter to investigate secret memo
Here is the only news clip I've been able to find about this issue. It was broadcast once or twice on CNN early Saturday morning. I have not seen any mention of this on CNN or other networks since that time.
Video in Real Media Format (1 minute)
I feel better just knowing that Mr. Conyers is demanding answers from the Administration.
I look forward to participating in the online chat this afternoon and learning more about what I can do to amplify this issue.

Oddly, some reports in the media seem to take your letter as news (because it is, sadly), rather than leading with the memo (now out for almost a week and a half)itself. This seems to indicate that, only in this circuitous way, can the American public be told (or had it confirmed) that their President flat out LIED to them. It seems intended to deflect the expected intimidation: the media are reporting on Congress questioning Bush Co., not calling out Bush Co. themselves for these lies. Why isn't the media aggravated that they were lied to, also, unless they know they should have known better?
Can't anyone admit mistakes, anymore? What if we ran our families/businesses like this? We would fail in those endeavors.
That they have no courage to print the truth the rest of the world knows is a reflection of our lack of free press. We need to BE THE MEDIA ourselves!

At least there is someone, even if only one at this point, who is calling this to our attention. Thank you Mr. Conyers for your bravery and your determination to not let this go away.
So many lies, so many dead people, American and Iraqi, innocent people who didn't need to die for these lies. This is indeed impeachable. How can we not be outraged as a country by what this administration is doing in our name?? Moral values?? They have no values, certainly they don't value life. They lie about democracy too, another value they don't truly support.
I am brought to tears thinking about what is happening. The only saving grace is people like you who will stand up to these thieves and criminals no matter what. I am so very very thankful for your efforts.

THIS ISSUE IS A LITMUS TEST FOR US AS A NATION
As a nation can we fully discuss and analyze this gigantic, fundamental issue without someone throwing political gasoline on the discussion, diverting our attention with soap opera stories, smearing the messengers, or burying the truth using media clout? Have we lost the ability to process and resolve important political issues like the UK memo?
Thank you Mr. Conyers for giving us hope that we are not past the point of no return. But how this issue plays out in the coming weeks will tell us a lot about the state of our democracy.

Thank you Mr. Conyers for taking up this issue. I am apalled at the glaring lack of coverage by the media about this leaked British memo. I believe journalists have an ethical obligation to report "factual news" regardless of the political consequences. I'm shocked, horrified, and dismayed at what has become of the media and journalism as a whole in America. Even the Washington Post and NY Times seemed to have joined the rest of the corporate media in the White House's pocket.

Here is a copy of a letter I wrote to the Editor of my local newspaper. I am thoroughly disgusted and plan to send letters everywhere!
Mr. Conyers, have any republicans feigned interest in asking the president about the memo? Have you had any sort of response from anyone, from representatives and senators on up? It would be fascinating to know just how all of our elected officials are responding to news that, for me, should be on the front page of every newspaper around the world. If Mr. Clinton was president, could you see the steam rising out of Hatch's ears? Please keep us informed so we can go on a letter writing campaign. Thanks for all you do.
Letter to follow:
Regarding your article in 'World & Nation' on 5/9/2005 entitled "Memo: Bush Manipulated Iraq Intel" I was concerned about the placement of this article way back on page 21, while page 1 and 2 were filled with concerns of Governor Pataki's lack of progress redeveloping lower Manhattan. I have begun to assume that most newspapers in this country are terrified to write 'less than positive' descriptions regarding issues of this administration. I have concluded, as have many peers, that the Republican machine currently in power has blackmailed, extorted, and brainwashed the media into periods of extreme literary hesitancy for fear of being labeled left-wing-liberal-radicals. The quality of the news has gone steadily down-hill as a result. We couldn't get Monica Lewinsky off the front pages, but we can't find room on page 1 for potentially devastating news that our President may have lied in order to promote his own personal agenda. America is now involved in a war where over 1600 families have suffered the ultimate loss, and untold thousands of others suffer from life-altering, overwhelming and disfiguring injury, all under false pretenses. Edward R. Murrow would be turning in his grave. I’m not in mine yet, but I’m cringing from the smell of long-dead good journalism.

Good to see the story is a least making the paper. However, the Chicago Tribune had it buried at the bottom of page 15 in their Sunday print edition, while a very important story about "coupon clipping" made the front page. I expect more from a major Chicago newspaper.

Conyers: I don't get it.
I have read and reread this "memo" and it is nothing more than a statement of an OPINION regarding what another person's OPINION was of Bush and his actions in the run up to the Iraq conflict.
So anybody in the world can draft a memo stating opinions and thoughts regarding the Bush Administration's actions and you would be for an investigation I guess.
Wonder what Fidel thinks of Bush. Maybe you and he should get together and conjure up an investigation. Call in Maxine Waters, I think she has a crush on him.

Technically speaking, this is a set of "minutes" of a meeting, and not a "memo", even though the TimesUK article titled it as such. A technical error.
Minutes of a meeting are a record of what was said, or reported, and recorded by the person taking the minutes for later distribution. C did not say in those minutes: "in my opinion" or anything of the kind:
"C reported on his recent talks in Washington. There was a perceptible shift in attitude. Military action was now seen as inevitable. Bush wanted to remove Saddam, through military action, justified by the conjunction of terrorism and WMD. But the intelligence and facts were being fixed around the policy."
The above is a statment - not an opinion.
However, I'd venture a guess that you wouldn't believe it anyway, even if Bush admitted that it was the truth to your face.
Heaven forbid that our 'Commander-in-Chief' would put the good men and woman of our country at risk, right?

Those who don't understand the issue should not be confused by the Republican and neo-con apologists and shills who post their "everybody had plans" and "there's no smoking gun here" posts.
This document demonstrates three key points:
1. The Administration had already chosen to go to war at a time when they were telling the American people that they had not yet made that decision and would allow the "process of inspections to go forward." They never intended to let the process succeed -- they were intent on war and had already made the decision. LIES!
2. The Administration KNEW that Iraq did not possess WMD or pose a threat to the United States or their neighbors at a time when they were telling the American people and Congress the EXACT OPPOSITE. In fact, Mr. Cheney said he knew EXACTLY where the WMD's were, "We know where they are[WMDs]. They're in the area around Tikrit and Baghdad and east, west, south and north somewhat.") That doesn't sound like… "Our intelligence leads us to believe that they might have WMD -- that says WE KNOW. But, of course, what he KNEW was exactly the opposite. Again, LIES! Bold-faced, disgusting, ugly lies. And then, I actually saw him say: "I never said that we knew for sure that Iraq had WMD's." If, by that, he meant he never used the term "for sure" then I guess he isn't a disgusting, disingenuous, boldfaced, hypocritical liar. But he is.
3. The Administration KNEW that the intelligence did not support their LIES and was in the process of "fixing the intelligence to match the policy." That is, getting others to LIE and selectively choosing which intelligence to look at so that their LIES could appear to be truth.
The current Republican administration and those who support it are the vilest and most disgusting of human beings, because they are willing to sacrifice human lives for their own low desires.
Those who act as apologists for them or try to deflect the discussion to non-sequitors are equally culpable.

The story is worse than people think. Now that the government has been forced to disclose the full legal advice submitted by Lord Goldsmith, the extent to which Parliament and the country were misled is clear for all to see.

Dr. Levinson: Thanks, as always, for your activism. A letter to the editor is exactly the kind of action we need. Many, Many such letters could really get the ball rolling.
Emily: Unfortunately, I did not record my appearance on Ed's show and it does not appear to be archived anywhere. I want to improve upon our consistency in doing this, and archiving such appearances to bring more of this kind of content.
Chabuka: I am very disturbed about the corporate media's neglect of this story, and intend to call them to task for it in a number of ways in the very near future.
Susan: It was certainly a grave mistake for many in my party to have supported the drive to war. That said, this matters, regardless of whether the same people who made this mistake would do it the same way again. This is for truth, accountability and history.
Hank and Kirk: Thanks for visiting the site. The central points here are that (1) the President was allegedly telling the truth to a foreign government about the fact that he had already decided to go to war, while he was lying to your elected representatives and you and (2) that the President was allgedly twisting the intelligence data to justify a war he knew to be illegal and unjustified. If you don't see the seriousness of those allegations and the apparent support for them in the memo, I think you are perhaps too blinded by partisanship to fairly evaluate the facts.
Charlie L: Well put.

I read an article soon after the election that Kerry misheard the question "if you knew then what you know now would you still vote fo the war". Apparently he was asked the question outdoors at the Grand Canyon, and with the wind blowing plus his hearing loss (from Vietnam) he misunderstood. Then he didn't want to further the flip-flopper perception and didn't correct himself. It broke my heart to read that, because that answer was held against him big time.

You clowns are hilarious!
When are you nimrods going realize that forged documents don't work?
How come the recorded minutes of this alleged meeting consistently refer to events in the past tense?
Example: "Sadam knew that regular army morale was poor."
Why Not: "Sadam knows that regular army morale is poor."
Example: "Bush wanted to remove Sadam..."
Why Not: "Bush wants to remove Sadam..."
The entire "document" reads as if these events occurred some time ago yet the premise is that these people were reporting on the current state of affairs.
And oh, by the way, our own government conducted an extensive, bipartisan investigation that specifically addressed whether or not the administraion had "fixed" intelligence and found NO EVIDENCE (none zero zilch nada) of any such actions.

We had the opportunity to solidify relationships with many nations after 9/11...too bad we didn't have a president smart enough to recognize it...
I see Laura on TV - in her middle east trip...thanking everyone for improving lives in the middle east. Oh My God, somebody break the new to Laura...we haven't improved the lives of anyone, American's included!!! I say bring the troops home, let Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld and Rice go win the peace in Iraq. Oh yes, Carl Rove, Tom Delay, and a few others could go along and help. How can we bring Democracy to anyone while we are in the midst of loosing ours?
Thank God for Air America and bloggers who have the truth and tell it. How sad it is that our administration does not even have a passing acquaintance with the truth!

EE,
I just want you to realize that your source of information is where the document puts the blame, your source is bias. The duck tells the chicken that the wolf tried to eat him, so the chicken confirms this acusation by asking the wolf and of course, the wolf denies it.
Mr. Conyers,
I think what you are doing is wonderful and inspiring, please do your best to bring bush and his cronies to justice. Its time we rebuild America, and like a poster above said, put aside political priorities in-order to give america a little time to catch its breath.
Thank you Mr.Conyers!

Does anyone remember the last paragraph from Bush's 2001 inaugural speech?
Look it up. Sounds like a threat to someone, kind of like a gunslinger calling out his next victim for a high-noon shootout. Except it is our National Guard, OVER THERE taking the return fire.
I think, in retrospect,it means more now than it did then, especially when we ponder whether this war was pre-planned even before the 2000 election.
So, which really came first, the Chicken or the War? Is there really any doubt?
Which begs the enigmatic question, are we at war because W is president, or was he installed (at any cost) for that very purpose?
Sherlock Holmes would simply shake his head and say "duh!"
JEP

I believe that the president and many of those around him have committed unpardonable lies. I felt for many months that this president and many around him should be "called on the carpet" for their actions that have led to war, death, mayhem, and loss of status with our most trusted allies. If an impeachment is pursued, I will everything I can as a citizen to see that the truth prevails. thank you.

Representative Conyers...If your hearings do not lead to an impeachment of Mr.Bush, along with his "team," and his banishment from office, our system has failed to serve the people, and short of changing this system to an economic democracy..., such political/corporate collusion will continue until that nuclear button is pushed and life as we now know it will perish.

Dear Representative Conyers Jr.
Although not a resident of your fine state, as a fellow Democrat I'd like to thank you for working to keep this issue from disappearing from view.
These are Impeachable offenses and I for one, will not be satisfied until that has become a reality.
I was wondering, since the major news media don't seem to want to inform the general public about this, couldn't the National Democratic Committee finance a 30 second commercial and get it some air time? I realize this might use up some financial resourses normally used for elections, but I do believe that if enough Americans are informed about this, they will demand the impeachment of President Bush and proper disciplinary actions for any one else involved. Surely this would be enough of a boon to the Democratic party to justify use of some funding?
Considering the current lack of media coverage, perhaps this should be considered a Public Service Announcement?

The coperate media is controlled by the US military, a PSYOPS unit.

If you review this information, substitute the word domestic for foreign and it will explain the media's failure. Perhaps they were infiltrated and didn't even konw it.

HEY FOLKS, HAVE YOU FORGOTEN? THE PARTY'S OVER. NO MATTER WHAT YOU TRY OR DO, YOU WILL FALL ON YOUR FACE. MAINLY, BECAUSE YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT AND EVEN IF YOU DID YOU WOULDN'T KNOW HOW TO PRESENT IT. YOU AND THE LIBERAL TALK SHOW THAT YOU ARE ASSOCIATED WITH ARE TWO OF THE BEST THINGS THAT HAS HAPPENED TO THE CONSERVATIVE MOVEMENT. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK. GORDON
